Mrs. Rehder has taught social studies for 19 years at Goodhue. She started off with getting her bachelor's degree at UW River Falls then taught for a few years. She then went to Mankato State to get her Masters degree. That's when she decided she wanted to be a principal in the future. She received a specialist degree at St.Mary's and attained a principal licence. After 19 years of teaching she became the Goodhue High School Principal.
She explains her new experience as what she did for the students she now does for the teachers. “I make sure they are developing as a teacher, I am supporting them and helping them with what I can in the classroom just as I supported students.” She is now developing new relationships with staff, that is very exciting for her but she is losing that everyday connection with students which is a let down that came with the new job. She still finds time to get that student connection “The best part of my day is getting out of the office and walking the halls, talk to students and pop in classrooms.”
Finding time in her new position is not the easiest. With homecoming last week she was at school for 12 hours some days. She tries to be involved in as many student activities as possible to stay connected with the students.
After all the years of training she has no regrets about the job change. Before she accepted the job she made a promise to herself “if I don't like this I will go back to the classroom.” She also says that “as long as I am around students and education it's the place for me!”
